Our Proposals
The proposal will include the construction of a waste-to-hydrogen facility.
The waste-to-hydrogen facility operates by converting non-recyclable waste into hydrogen which can be used as a clean fuel, and CO₂ which will be captured and sold for use in industry (for biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel) via a specialist process. Type 1 aggregate will also be produced as part of the process and transported from the Site for use in off-site, local construction projects.
This approach helps to reduce the amount of waste that would otherwise go to landfill or be incinerated, reducing emissions and keeps more value within the local area. by processing waste locally and using the hydrogen and materials to directly benefit Kent’s local economy and services. An innovation and education centre is also proposed and will serve as a hub for highly skilled individuals working in the hydrogen energy sector, providing training and information to both the future and existing workforce on renewable energy projects.
The proposal would include comprehensive landscaping surrounding the building and across the wider site.
If approved, the facility will:
- Create up to 130 skilled jobs across operations, training and education.
- Provide local training opportunities through partnerships with schools, colleges and universities, helping to inspire future careers in science and engineering.
- Generate clean, reliable hydrogen to support the decarbonisation of transport and public services.
- Create a sustainable, local circular economy, turning non-recyclable waste into valuable resources such as hydrogen fuel, captured CO2 and reusable construction materials, keeping materials and benefits within the local area.
- Operate efficiently and responsibly, recovering around 70% of the energy from incoming waste and minimising demand on the National Grid.
- Reduce carbon emissions by around 109,000 tonnes every year, the same climate benefit as 174 return flights between Berlin and New York.
- Support community initiatives, including educational outreach and partnerships with local charities and groups.
- Set a benchmark for clean energy innovation, helping to establish Thanet as a leading example for future waste-to-hydrogen projects across the UK.
The proposed scheme is designed to deliver cleaner energy and real local benefits, supporting jobs, education and responsible waste management.
